Festa Junina Festival Entrances Brazilian City Salvador

The commencement of a three-day Festa Junina Festival beginning Thursday has gripped merrymakers in fervor state of enthusiasm in Salvador the capital city of northeast Brazil's Bahia State as festivities are held all around the country.

The Brazilian Festa Junina, an annual festival celebrated throughout the month of June, dates back to the time of Portuguese colonization and commemorates some of the most famous Catholic saints such as John the Baptist, as well as celebrating the end of summer and the beginning of the harvest.

The festival is celebrated with live music, traditional dances and with merrymakers wearing traditional outfits.

"During the festivities, we all dress in checkered shirts or skirts; in a word, we must dress in checkered clothes. And we also wear straw hats with country-style makeup, then you can go to parties!" said Cristina, a local resident.

Every region has its own way of celebrating, however, the colonial streets in Salvador make the city's festivities special. Founded by the Portuguese in 1549 as the first capital of Brazil, Salvador is one of the oldest colonial cities in the Americas. The celebration takes place at Salvador's historic city center, where it is still home to many examples of Portuguese colonial architecture and historical monuments. Performances such as capoeira - a Brazilian marital art that combines dance with acrobatics, African drumming and other traditional dances are some of the highlights of the festivities.

The Festa Junina in Salvador will last three days. It attracts thousands of visitors to experience the folk custom culture every year.
