As fate would have it, my last project, Disorder, released the same week we went into national lockdown.
Here’s hoping that the release of Reorder signals good things ahead for all of us!
The first song of Reorder is called “Glory Days” and releases today. The word glory caught my attention in two different verses I read recently:
“But we… are being transformed [into Christ’s] image from glory to glory…”
(2 Cor. 3:18)
And,
“Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope.”
(Romans 5:3-4)
I love the way the two different uses of “glory” play together in these verses. It got me thinking about the phrase “glory days” and how we tend to think of the glory days as a charmed time in our life when everything was perfect and trouble-free.
But as I read those verses, and elsewhere in scripture, it’s clear that the challenging days are when God gets his best work done in us. I wondered: what if our glory days are actually the days of trouble and struggle that God uses to transform me, “from glory to glory?”
“Pain teaches a most counterintuitive thing—that we must go down before we even know what up is,” says Richard Rohr. “Suffering of some sort seems to be the only thing strong enough to destabilize our arrogance and ignorance.”
But the good news is that our suffering is exactly where the love of God meets us! The difficult days are good days to seek God, trusting that I’m broken open enough for him to do his best work in me, moving me from glory to glory, making me more of the person I most want to be—someone who looks a little more like Jesus every day.
Lyrics:
I've been longing for what I thought were the glory days
Back when my life felt so easy
Anywhere but here would be a better place
Caught up California dreaming
I know my heart can get carried away
On a hindsight holiday
But standing in the middle of the rain right here
It's so clear
These are my glory days
These are my glory days
Busted and broken, but finally open
Wider than an empty grave
This is the good life now
Found it where I fell down
Shattered in pieces, but thank you, Jesus
These are my, these are my glory days
These are my glory days
The hard times are where you get the best of me
Yeah, this is where we turn the corner
I'm becoming more than I ever dreamed
In the glory days of my reorder
You make my heart stronger when it breaks
Cuz when I fall, I fall into Your grace
Standing in the middle of the pain right here
It's so clear
These are my glory days
These are my glory days
Busted and broken, but finally open
Wider than an empty grave
This is the good life now
Found it where I fell down
Shattered in pieces, but thank you, Jesus
These are my, these are my glory days
These are my glory days
You take me higher
When I walk through fire
Hallelujah, hallelujah
These are my glory days
You make me stronger
When the night is longer
Hallelujah, hallelujah
These are my, these are my...
These are my glory days
These are my glory days
Busted and broken, but finally open
Wider than an empty grave
This is the good life now
Found it where I fell down
Shattered in pieces, but thank you, Jesus
These are my, these are my glory days
Right where I'm at
The good with the bad
I'm not looking back
As long as I have you
These are my glory days
Right where I'm at
The good with the bad
I'm not looking back
As long as I have you
These are my glory days
