Yunlin young farmer brings new audiences to the fields with his online videos|Taiwan News

A young farmer in Yunlin is bringing new audiences to the fields with his online videos. Lin Po-hsien has a popular online presence where he shares lots of videos about farming life and the beauty of Yunlin. He hopes that his content will inspire people with the beauty of the bucolic life, and help boost the local economy. People can learn a lot about the realities of farm life from his sharings. And viewers can even adopt one of his watermelons, and receive personal updates from their melon baby.

Lin Po-hsien explains the trick to choosing a good watermelon. His videos focus on cool happenings in the fields and information about farming, and he has an adoption scheme whereby members of the public can watch their adopted melons grow online.

He’s built a watermelon kindergarten, and gives viewers regular updates on the melons’ growth. No matter where his urban viewers live, they can experience the delights of farming vicariously. In harvest season, the melons’ adoptive families are invited to Yunlin to be part of the fun in the fields.

Our watermelon’s name is Guala Guala. It’s such fun. I’ve never done this before.

I look after the melons for them, and some of the more serious melon moms and melon dads come here to see them in person and take photos together. I send them photos regularly, every five or 10 days.

Lin grew up in Taipei, but as an adult, decided to move to the area where his dad’s family hails from, Yunlin. He’s entered the world of farming, which is mostly peopled by older generations. Starting from scratch, he experienced the old saying, “different trades are separated by mountains.” But his new life gives him a firsthand view of the unique beauty of Yunlin.

You start with a flat field, and you plan its beds, and you put in the rice and the netting, and then you plant it, water it. The work is so detailed, it’s not like it will grow if you just scatter seeds around and sprinkle some water like people think. Not at all, that wouldn’t work at all! You’d lose everything, for sure, if you didn’t manage it properly.

He doesn’t have much experience in farming, but Lin is already a dab hand at all the big and small tasks of the job. He records the ins and outs of farm life on film, and shares both farming tips and local landmarks with his fans. He hopes his content will introduce more of Yunlin to audiences.

For more people to see Yunlin, and even more local, to see Taixi. We have lots of unique things in this area. I think everyone knows that people generally don’t come here. But I think it’s great to be able to get people to focus on this place.

Lin challenges himself every day and loves the life he’s chosen. He hopes that he can attract more customers to this agricultural heartland with his dedication to farming and his unique way of bringing freshness to traditional work.
