As budding fly fishers we tend to limit our learning to only 2-3 basic knots. And while a couple knots will often suffice, there are distinct advantages to mastering more knots than just enough to get by. For example, simply learning a stronger knot to your fly can land you more fish, and save you some flies!
Knots are easy to learn with a little diligence and the power of YouTube. Add a bit of practice and you’ll be roping in large fish in no time 💪.
Common uses for each knot:
Clinch Knot- tippet to fly or tippet ring
Uni Knot- tippet to fly or tippet ring
Double Uni knot- leader to leader/tippet
Triple Surgeons- leader to tippet and great for dropper tags
Blood knot- leader to leader/tippet
Needle nail knot- leader to fly line
Nail knot- leader to fly line or fly line to backing
Perfection loop- leader to looped fly line and great for a loop knot to a fly with bite wire
Surgeons loop- simple connection for backing to looped fly line
