The first thing we did when we arrived at Tokyo Haneda airport was to buy a Suica card from the machine - it can be used on the subway-metro, and for paying at many stores.
We tried to used our credit card but it malfunctioned, luckily we had Japanese yen currency which we used to buy the Suica card.

Since we were staying in Japan for 3 weeks we put about 5000 yen on the card. You can choose to put less … the attendant informed us that we cannot get back unused money so it’s better to put a small amount then add as needed. You can add money at the 7Eleven, metro station …
This was just our experience, yours might be different.
