Inside China's Moon Base: Exclusive Info

Chinese space officials have unveiled new details about the ambitious International Lunar Research Station (ILRS) project, which recently welcomed a dozen new partners. According to Wu Yanhua, the chief designer of China’s major deep space exploration program, the China-led moon base will be capable of conducting scientific research operations within a 100km (62 mile) radius of the lunar south pole by 2035. By 2050, the ILRS will expand into a network of research facilities at the moon’s south pole, equator, and far side. A Tiangong-like space station in lunar orbit will serve as the Earth-moon transport hub, Wu announced during the Deep Space Exploration Conference (Tiandu Forum) in Huangshan, Anhui province.

Chinese scientists are planning to send bricks made from simulated lunar soil into space to test their durability in extreme conditions and assess their potential for building a research base on the moon. These sample bricks will be transported to the Tiangong space station next month aboard the Tianzhou 8 cargo spacecraft, according to Ding Lieyun, an expert in intelligent construction from Huazhong University of Science and Technology in Wuhan.

Ding’s team has proposed designs for the research base, including an egg-shaped “lunar pot vessel” that could be 3D-printed on the moon or assembled using lunar soil bricks with the help of a robot operating on the lunar surface.

The ILRS project is a multifaceted endeavor that reflects and amplifies China's space ambitions. It has the potential to reshape the global space landscape, influencing international relations, technological development, and the future of space exploration. The project's success will depend on how China navigates the challenges of international cooperation, legal governance, and the strategic interests of other spacefaring nations.
