The onset of burnout is often connected to unrealistic expectations about goals. Every working person would benefit from actively trying to avoid burnout. Considering its harmful effects and how common it is, you can prevent burnout using various strategies such as time management, positive thinking. Finding meaning in your work and setting boundaries. Each of these strategies are powerful tools against burnout and can be a part of your plan to prevent it. Before setting goals, ask yourself if you have what it takes to achieve them. For example, are you emotionally and financially ready? Do you have the proper time to dedicate to your goal? Are you mentally equipped to handle it? Do you have the right training? Do you need the help of others? These are just a few of the many questions you can ask yourself when setting a goal. You'll want to avoid goals that aren't possible to reach. Haven't ever been achieved before by anyone or made without careful consideration and were made without prior research or knowledge. Any of these misguided goals can lead to burnout. The path to achieving your goals is not always straight. You might adjust your goals if you discover new information or if you decide to change what you want to achieve. Maybe you learned of a quicker way to accomplish them, or you're adapting to other changes. Here are five strategies to set realistic goals. Set meaningful goals. It will be easier to focus on achieving them, and you're less likely to get distracted. Divide your main goal into smaller goals that you can accomplish one at a time. This gives you a sense that you're building up to succeed. Allow yourself more time than you think You may need to reach your goal. You won't feel rushed and you'll be able to take breaks or pauses as needed. Keep track of your progress and focus on how much you've accomplished along your journey rather than on how much more you have to do. Embracing your smaller achievements can be very motivating and try not to worry about failures. Stay in the present moment and remember that the only way forward is to do your best. Sometimes you might readjust your goals because of repeated difficulties. Instead of engaging in negative self-talk, find out why something isn't working and try to correct your attempts. Along the way, you may experience frustration, disappointment, self-doubt and negative thoughts. But setting goals that are achievable will lead to hope, greater self-confidence and a higher sense of self-worth.
