The Hazaras have a complicated heritage. Throughout history the region they inhabited, Hazarajat was isolated and their interactions with neighbouring ethnic groups were oftentimes antagonistic. The Pashtuns had pushed them out of Kandahar and Wardag; whilst the Uzbeks were known to enslave them. Huge swaths of Hazarajat were too dangerous for caravans and traders to cross for fear of robbery; its isolation had led it to be known as a lawless backwater. Considering Abdur Rahman Khan’s unyielding vision to centralise political authority, he could not allow a region in his realm to be outside the purview of the government and at the mercy of foreign powers. During the Second Anglo Afghan War, certain Hazara tribes had been instigated by the British to join their cause. When Abdur Rahman imposed greater government authority in the area, tensions spilled over. This was made worse by soldiers committing atrocities in the course of collecting revenues.
