Kirby Institute Postgraduate Student Prize 2021: Miss Heather Valerio

The recipient of the Kirby Institute Postgraduate Student Prize 2021, Miss Heather Valerio did a presentation on her winning paper "Progress towards elimination of HCV infection among people who inject drugs".

The Kirby Institute Postgraduate Student Prize is an annual award given to the most significant first author paper by a Kirby Institute student, published in the previous calendar year in a peer-reviewed journal in the area of infectious diseases.

Progress towards elimination of HCV infection among people who inject drugs
Evaluating progress towards hepatitis C (HCV) elimination is critical. We estimated prevalence of current HCV infection and HCV treatment uptake among people who inject drugs in Australia. The factors associated with current HCV infection and treatment uptake were analysed among an observational cohort of people who inject drugs, attending a national network of drug treatment clinics and needle and syringe programs.

Miss Heather Valerio
PhD Student, Viral Hepatitis Clinical Research Program, Kirby Institute

Heather Valerio studied health science and public health at Boston University and completed her MPH at the University of Glasgow. She joined the Kirby Institute in 2018 to start a PhD with the Viral Hepatitis Clinical Research Program. Her principal area of interest is achieving hepatitis C elimination and improving the health and wellbeing of people who inject drugs.
