well, that verse is from the older version of the national anthem used during the time when Germany was an empire. it's not forbidden per se, but frowned upon, as it was abused by Nazi regime during their reign. the current anthem is the third part of the Deutschlandlied minus the part Robbie sang.

I'm German, like Robbie's music, never heard of that incident. But also I didn't know people in Britain knew about the first verse of that song, which was banned from the national anthem for being too 'patriotic'. Verse 2 is about german women and german wine. It is also not part of the Anthem. Jimmy Carr's comment is funny ... I think. ;)
