2:14 "You treat your mouth as it's it's heaven's gate" š The way his tone changed for this line was sooo good
Hozier helped me get through rehab. Only album Iāve bought in a very long time and struggling to get through heroin withdrawals. I was playing take me to church, work song, cherry wine all day. Every song on that album is great. I was so broken and did a karaoke with my roommate to from Eden. That was 8 years ago and now I am a counselor at the treatment. I never even thought Iād survive that year. I just wanted my parents to feel like they did all they could before I overdosed so they wouldnāt blame themselves. Miracles can happen
This song is such an earworm! Today I actually looked up to make sure the line was "my bed at 3" and yep, it is. Thanks for another great one, Hozier! :face-red-heart-shape:
The way he hits those high notes is perfection
The earliest I have ever been for any songā¼ļøš«š«š«š«
Nice black keys vibe on this song. Hozier has such a great voice!

Here's my breakdown of the key themes and possible meanings: Lifestyle and Habits - I take my whiskey neat / My coffee black and my bed at three symbolizes his preference for things that are straightforward, unfiltered, and perhaps unconventional. These choices reflect a desire for experiences that are authentic and potent, mirroring his approach to life. reflecting a broader inclination towards facing lifeās complexities head-on. - This contrasts with the other personās lifestyle, which he perceives as too āsweetā basically living in a fairytale avoiding lifeās hard and uncomfortable truths or perhaps lacking the depth and authenticity he craves. Someone who comes off too perfect flawless and disingenuous, no scars, one dimensional to their existence just pure flawless, picture perfect fairytale level of existing, which doesnt come off as real and authentic. It comes off as a frount Emotional Maturity and Incompatibility the song has nothing to do with age. Its about maturity. - The repeated line, Youāre too sweet for me suggests that the person in question has a disposition or outlook on life that is too childlike, naive, sugar-coated, or simply too different from his. This sweetness is juxtaposed with his preference for the "neat" and "black" aspects of life, implying an ability to handle lifeās bitterness which he finds more authentic or relatable. - The lyrics also touch on the idea of living fully but differently. The other person is described with a positive almost pure imagery ( bright as the morning / As soft as the rain ), yet he feels he cannot fully align with this perspective. This refrain suggests not just a difference in taste but a deeper emotional and philosophical incompatibility. The āsweetness/purityā here could imply a naivety or gullibility in the other personās approach to life, which doesnāt resonate with his more seasoned or perhaps cynical perspective. The song suggests a maturity in embracing lifeās bitter days, indicating a resilience and depth of character that he values and identifies himself with. Acceptance of Differences - Despite these differences, there's an undercurrent of respect and perhaps affection for the other person's way of being. He seems to understand and appreciate the qualities of the other person maybe they aren't this childlike naive person maybe they're just high on life If youāre drunk on life, babe / I think itās great but acknowledges a fundamental mismatch in their approaches to life and relationships. Reflection on Life and Death - But who wants to live forever babe suggests a contemplation of mortality and the ways people choose to experience life. He opts for a more immediate, perhaps hedonistic approach, while still recognizing the validity of the other person's more sheltered or cautious way of living. I wouldn't say his singing a love song or a rejection song, it's a mature acceptance of their incompatibility and differences EDIT: I wholeheartedly agree that "sweetness" is not inherently negative, The intention was not to cast those qualities in a negative light but rather to highlight the contrast as depicted in the song's narrative. I believe the song is speaking of an emotionally immature or emotionally sensitive person who prefers things sugarcoated, overly gentle, and would rather avoid life's hard and uncomfortable truths. I think the emotionally immature person's "sweetness" isn't authentic but more of a shield to protect them from reality and This person may opt for a gentler, more sugarcoated experience, potentially shying away from the rawness of life's difficulties, whereas he seems to prefer brutal truths, This is someone who values directness and forthrightness, preferring life's narratives to be delivered without embellishment-a 'give it to me straight' mentality.
