The XM was a dumb move by BMW and M division, they had the opportunity to make something really special and blew it. I don't like the kidney grills on the 4 series but absolutely don't mind the version on the M4 and M3.
Based on Doug DeMuros observations, this means the XM will be highly revered and valued in 20 years
Thomas’ commentary is legendary! 💯
Modern car companies are run by marketing departments. Brand and product managers make the calls, not the engineers, which is not good news for an "enthusiast" car manufacturer.
Huge lost opportunity to make an M1 replacement. Which could be another legend like the R8
Thomas simply the best!
They should have made a Z4M for the 50th anniversary car. That could have been an actual CSL
The thing that is unarguably unacceptable about the car is the rough suspension. A vehicle like this should be comfortable and BMW not making sure it is, was a huge mistake, even more so than the controversial design and weight.
EVERY DAY I see a lot of XMs in Beverly Hills, and West Hollywood…….probably 5-7 EVERY DAY. 🤷🏼♂️
BMW is not what it once was, but they’re still selling a lot of them. Drivers have changed in the last 20 years, and not for the better.
My 2 favorite people and bloggers. Great chat!! The XM is clearly struggling to sell. Most dealers still have a surplus of 2023 XM and XM Label models in their inventories, and many are sitting on large stocks of 2024 XM and XM Label vehicles that aren't moving. Despite this, they stubbornly refuse to offer reasonable discounts. I came across several XM models with mileage anywhere from 300 to 820 miles on what are supposed to be brand-new cars. For a vehicle like the XM, especially with the S68 M engine, this is unacceptable. The engine needs careful break-in during the first 1,200 miles, so those high miles likely mean the cars have been heavily used for test drives or dealer launches. If I’m going to pay a premium for a brand-new car, I expect it to be just that—new. When I tried negotiating for a better price, the dealers were uncooperative and downright difficult to work with. It's baffling that they’d rather hold onto these cars and let them depreciate than move them at a more reasonable price. Their refusal to offer any kind of meaningful discount, especially on cars with high mileage, shows a clear lack of customer respect and understanding of the market. The XM is not selling, yet dealers are trying to push these high-mileage cars as if they’re pristine, brand-new vehicles. This approach has made me lose all respect for BMW and its dealerships. It’s frustrating when a premium brand like BMW seems more focused on holding onto unsold inventory than treating their customers fairly.
it was a great way to test out the drivetrain
Another really healthy debate, always appreciate the honesty 🙏
Every single BMW has been too heavy for over 10 years. Well over 10 years. It sucks
Agreed, they could of done something more special. The X5M is more appealing so why buy an XM. They made an M2 CSL prototype but didn't put it into production which is sad.
Thomas tells it like it is!
I dont get who the hell had the idea to name it XM and market it as a M1 successor? Bmw should better used the capacities for a entire new car to make a real proper 3.0 Csl not a rebadged M4. I like the new 3.0 Csl, but in the End its not worth 750k, its in fact just a M4 with body kit.
The M760i. Perfect engine but not on the perfect car. This is why they should have made a true sports/super car with a V10 and/or V12. And also just hearing “where’s your supercar BMW?” just makes the brand look left out y’know. Funnily enough we all know BMW M’s V8 can outrun some supercars but having a big engine on a true sports/super car just feels superior. I don’t care about hp figures because it will be fast but most importantly it’s the driving enjoyment from that V10 V12 sound. Why do I say that performance oriented V12 is not perfect on the 7 Series? The 7er, specifically the LWB never made any sense to me.. for a BMW. Because BMWs are meant to be driven. I’m that type of person that can’t accept something that’s not according to the purpose or concept even if it’s the very smallest simplest thing. Like I would seriously just transfer that V12 to a SWB 7er just because of this. Unless if it’s the transporter and he chauffeurs non car people but still… Who’s gonna rest their legs while they’re being thrown around in the back??
Totally!
