None of the LWT staff probably read this, but for posterity: balloon boy was basically verified not to be a hoax, but the parents hadn’t kept track of their child and didn’t realize he was hiding in the attic rather than in the balloon, so they panicked as any parents would have. The police officials then basically rigged the process to force the family to take the fall in order to make a name for the higher ups in the police department involved, and to wring them for payout. The higher ups involved there have since been involved in other scandals and stripped of their promotions, and the family were exonerated (to little to no fanfare). It’s frustrating when the LWT team end up doing something hypocritical when condemning others for not doing due research but they keep having lapses themselves, especially when this essentially amounted to an instance such as the “worst aunt ever”, a story LWT covered ages ago where the media just flat out piled on a public shaming with no merit.
