Lives next to a historical gold mine here, and since it’s pretty important to the identity of this town, I naturally have done my best to absorb knowledge about the gold-harvesting techniques used in the days of yore.

Panning for gold is one such method, and you can still use it to find gold flowing through rivers like the Yukon in Alaska, or some of those found here near my home. Basically, you put your sample in a small amount of water, enough so that you can move your hand through it as though it were only water. From there, you use the hand in the pan as well as tilting the pan to release tiny amounts of water into your bucket or other container below. Since gold is more dense than most of the other schmutz in there, it will tend to remain in the pan, which you can help ensure by carefully monitoring the water that you release.

This technique would help you potentially find more gold from these sorts of grab bags (in fact they used to sell similar bags at the museum before its current closure, and they encouraged you to try panning it on-property). The ol’ sieve method just isn’t fine enough for how small particles of gold can be.
